History


Located approximately 30 miles north of San Diego proper, North County is a gathering of smaller cities that have, within the last half century begun to unite themselves as one cohesive community. The region is rich in Hispanic heritage dating back to the 1700’s. Mission San Luis Rey, one of California’s famous Spanish missions, founded in 1798 is located in the county’s most northern coastal city of Oceanside.


Geography


You won’t have travel far to watch the sunset in North County. In fact, for many, it’s a matter of walking out to their patio or deck to watch the sun kiss the ocean water at the end of the day. Coastal North County towns are nestled between the ocean and low rolling hills. The coastline is also peppered with lagoons, inlets and tide pools teeming with ocean wildlife.

 

Climate


It’s no surprise that so many want to vacation here or call North County their home. San Diego boasts one of the most temperate climates in the entire world. The region sits on the same latitude as the Mediterranean, which means near perfect weather year round. On average, temperatures rarely dip below 50 degrees or above 90 degrees respectively. That makes for some pretty sweet surfing weather.


Culture


North County San Diego is a fantastic place to raise a family, start a business, or retire.  Those who live here take pride in their community and value an easygoing lifestyle. Many residents prefer North County’s slower paced beachy vibe to the hustle and bustle of the San Diego downtown area. North County is no stranger to affluence and on the whole residents tend to be wealthier when compared to the rest of the county.


Schools


North County San Diego is home to Cal State San Marcos and 2 community colleges. Each of North County San Diego’s many cities have their own school districts with no shortage of elementary, middle and high schools. There are over 100 charter schools in the county, many of which are located in North County. You’ll also discover that North County has a plentiful amount of private education options including schools with secular and religious affiliations.
