A former NFL player is making waves in a new career capturing scenes from nature. Self-taught landscape and ocean photographer, Ty Schmitt, recently made waves a few weeks ago when his image of lightning striking over La Jolla (shot from Torrey Pines Gliderport) went viral locally.
“Landscape photography is all about chasing the best light. As landscape photographers we spend years trying to time up the ultimate sunrise or sunset at the perfect location,” Schmitt says.
Bliss 101 owner Helen Zeldes noticed his talent and invited Schmitt to join a handful of other artists in the boutique’s artist incubator program designed to showcase local talent that invokes the “bliss” of mother nature. Bliss 101 is known for supporting local artisans—from jewelry makers to photographers—as well as those around the world who make fair trade and eco-friendly handmade items. Bliss 101, located in Encinitas, is a go-to spot for socially-conscious locals. Even furniture and other home decor items in stock are often made from reclaimed materials.
Bliss 101 in Encinitas is the first and only gallery to feature Schmitt’s work. Based in La Jolla, he was a football 6th round draft pick from SDSU (a long snapper) that went to play for the Seahawks in 2008. Unfortunately, a severe back injury ended his NFL career and launched him into deep depression. After a visit to a hypnotist to gain clarity and overcome his depression, he experienced a fundamental re-awakening, resulting in an epiphany to follow an unrealized passion for landscape photography.
Schmitt adds, “When I first picked up the camera and starting shooting, I felt a sense of self expression and freedom I had never felt. I was immediately addicted to art form of capturing nature in her purist state.”
Guests of a special exhibition on Saturday aptly named Chasing Light will have a chance to meet Ty Schmitt, have pictures signed and learn about his transition from football to camera in Bliss 101’s intimate setting.
