Sea Change is a small private school, fittingly located a five minute walk from the ocean in downtown Del Mar, which offers a top quality educational experience. We provide proven, individualized academics, a world class physical education program and an innovative mindfulness based social and emotional learning component, all in a highly collaborative environment. Sea Change transforms each student in ways traditional schools cannot, and in so doing grows their self-esteem and impacts positively all aspects of their lives
Sea Change Preparatory’ s history goes back to the late 1990s when Cheryl Allcock (Zak) founded a full-time school support program to assist students who were facing challenges in their existing school settings. By 2000 the program turned into a full time school, graduating high school students to go on to college, and ultimately was named Arch Academy. During this time, Cheryl and other teachers designed the essential core of the innovative academic program which is used at Sea Change today, which focuses on an individualized approach to rigorous course work. The school was granted initial accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in 2004. During this time, Cheryl and her staff designed courses specifically to meet the rigorous requirements for the University of California a-g course list. As of 2007 its curriculum included all courses needed to meet the entrance requirements for the University of California and California State University college systems.
In 2010, the school became a non-profit organization with a 501(c)3 tax exempt status, and operated as a private school and also became a certified Non-Public School (NPS). The nationally (and internationally) recognized Zombie swim team also started that year.
In 2014 Arch was again granted WASC certification for another six years. In 2015 Cheryl introduced a mindfulness component to the school curriculum, and she and other teachers were certified by Mindful Schools in 2016. The academic curriculum now in place at Sea Change has been tested for over a decade, with solid results. Its graduates have been accepted at the top academic institutions in the country, including U.C. Berkeley, University of Michigan (engineering), U.C. Davis, Colby College, N.Y.U. (Tisch film school), Purdue (engineering), San Diego State University, U.C. San Diego, Saint John’s College, U.C. Santa Cruz and many others.
In the summer of 2017 Arch decided to voluntarily discontinue its NPS status, focus on being solely a private school, and move to a location more appropriate for its overall direction—Del Mar. With the change in location, it adopted a new name—Sea Change Preparatory—keeping in place the solid academic program, the world class swim program, and the mindfulness program all of which have been tested and proven with many classes of students over the years.
