Ice Skating in San Diego North County

We may not have snow or lakes that freeze over, but when the urge to go ice skating in North County San Diego strikes there are several places to go.

IcePlex Escondido

With two Olympic-sized skating rinks, IcePlex Escondido is San Diego's largest ice skating facility. Public ice skating is available every day but if you'd like to step it up a notch, try one of their beginning hockey or figure skating lessons. Other amenities include eight locker rooms, birthday party rooms, meeting rooms, a pro shop, video games, a heated lap pool, and a full gym.

IceTown Carlsbad

IceTown Carlsbad only opened up last year, but it's a busy place. About 25 hours a week are dedicated to open skating (the hours are listed online) with the rest filled with figure skating instruction, youth and adult hockey leagues, birthday parties, curling, and broomball. The venue can also handle fundraising and other private events.

Inn at Rancho Santa Fe

North County San Diego's only outdoor ice skating rink opens seasonally at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. It is traditionally unveiled at the Inn's Annual Olde Fashioned Christmas, an event that also involves lighting the 20-foot Christmas tree, s'mores, photos with Santa and other festive events. Skating sessions are three hours in length and can be reserved online. Session costs include skate rentals. A portion of the proceeds benefits Father Joe's Villages.

San Diego Ice Arena

This Mira Mesa institution has been catering to San Diego skaters for 35 years offering figure skating, ice hockey, birthday parties, skating school and themed public sessions (family party sessions, teenage meltdown, adult night, and afternoon sessions for those looking to practice skate school moves). San Diego Ice Arena also has a skate safe program where helmets are provided for all ages.

UTC Ice Sports Center

UTC Ice Sports Center is located inside the food court of Westfield UTC shopping mall. While it's used for hockey and figure skating, public sessions are available as well. First-time skaters should try the free introductory classes on Saturday (one class per skater offered on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Frozen Fairgrounds at Del Mar

For a short time only: December 15th – 31st you and your friends and family can enjoy public ice skating, rent out a portion for a private party, or check the schedule for a Golden State Hockey Rush Tournament games.

Poway Ice Arena

Go check out the arena that our very own Gulls practice at! This full-service facility has it all: rentals, lessons, private parties, attentive staff making sure everyone is safe, and a warm-me-up café that even has vanilla lattes. As an added bonus they frequently run Groupon specials as well.
