Whatever you might want to give yourself and your children, you might also want to give your pets as well. More and more, pet owners are pampering their pets. They’re also expressing their personality through stylish merchandise for all their four-legged family members. If spoiling your pup is your favorite pastime, there’s a sweet boutique you must visit!
The Ultimate Shopping Experience for Pet Owners
Muttropolis is the ultimate shopping experience for dog and cat owners. The stylish boutique has made a name for itself. It’s known as the retail experience for the passionate pet parent who wants to pamper their fur babies. For co-founders, Steve Goldberg and Janet McCulley, along with their spouses, opening Solana Beach-based Muttropolis in 2002 was a labor of love.
And it shows. Muttropolis has everything a pet owner needs to spoil their furry friend. From luxury beds, to designer pet carriers, to a beautiful line of Zen-inspired raised bowls, and a wall of designer collars with matching leashes that will make you want to start a collection.
Designed to Pamper
The owners came up with the name, Muttropolis as a fun take on a city for cats and dogs. With everything a pet could every need in one place, the store certainly is living up to its name. The “city” idea extends to their online “dog park” community, launched in 2007. Established as a place where the dog park meets retail, Muttropolis’ online community extends beyond the square footage of the stores.
Before walking inside the shop on Cedros in Solana Beach, your pet is already being treated like a special guest. The white picket fence surrounds the front patio where your fur baby is welcome to frolic. Once inside, you understand why the shop is on Cedros. With all of the designer items displayed, it’s no wonder the owners chose the design center of North County as their location.
The owners did their market research and came up with a concept to create an unparalleled shopping experience for pet owners. The interior is designed to keep your eyes wandering around the store, discovering new must-haves on every wall. With all the delightful items and colors on display, it’s a bit like walking into a candy store. A very high-end candy store, of course.
Finding All the Fabulous Items
“Our buyers do a good job finding what is new and unique in the industry,” McCulley has said. “This is a very personal experience with high quality, unique and differentiated products for pet parents.” Speaking with one of the buyers, I was told that they are constantly on the lookout for new products.
Trend pieces on the large display tables change regularly to keep things fresh. Visitor to the store will always find new specialty products, from the whimsical to the practical. From summer swimsuits to Halloween costumes, customers can style their pets for any occasion. Among the most popular items are life jackets and backpacks for dogs that, like their owners, enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle on the coast.
The most colorful display is the wall of designer leashes. Collars, leashes, and harnesses serve a practical purpose. But the collars you’ll find at Muttropolis add a flair of fashion to function. Some collars are bejeweled, while others are made from Italian leather.
On the east wall is a large display of luxury pet beds. With a wide array of sizes and fabric choices, it won’t be difficult to find a spot for your pet to sleep that blends with your decor.
If one of the in-store options still doesn’t match your interior, a custom service is available. The Muttropolis staff will assist you in ordering a bed from the additional swatch and bedding choices.
And there are elegant bowls and feeders that will add to any kitchen.
And to keep your pets clean, the shop offers spa-like bath and grooming products, like lavender and mint shampoo conditioners and green tea bergamot spritzer.
If there’s anything that can’t be found in the stores, Muttropolis’ website has additional options. Items can be delivered to your home, or, if you’ll be out of town, the store will hold them for you.
Sourcing the Best Food Items
The buyers also focus on finding the best food items for your pets. Sourcing foods that are grain free, soy free, wheat free and corn free, they are committed to the highest standards in pet food. The focus is on finding foods that offer more of an ancestral diet. Paleo, for pups, essentially.
They offer protein-rich food items in frozen, dry, or freeze dried. You’ll find a variety of meats, too, like venison, goat, rabbit, and pork. The food items they source are made with limited ingredients, so there’s more actual food versus filling.
They have the same philosophy when it comes to treats. They’re committed to making sure the food items are made with quality ingredients. They also look for treats that are special and unique. And there’s always a special treat featured that your pets can sample.
Caring for Community
An important part of the store’s mission is to support community. Muttropolis retail locations regularly host community events and partner with local pet-centric organizations. San Diego-area stores partner with the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas, Baja Animal Rescue and Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe to encourage pet adoptions. Every year, they find homes for 150 to 200 pets in each of our stores through their efforts.
Muttropolis also hosts other fun social events, like “Yappy Hours” for pets and their humans. Community walks and snacking sessions. There are two ways to stay on top of their current events calendar: One, follow them on Facebook and two, sign up for their newsletter on their website.
The owners certainly have found a great niche. Since they opened the flagship store six years ago in Solana Beach, they’ve gone on to open stores in La Jolla, Newport Beach, Tucson and Boulder, Colorado. Local pet owners are lucky to have such a great place to find fun and fashionable items, as well as connect with other pet families in the community.
