Rancho Santa Fe Neighborhood Guide: Hacienda Santa Fe

Adjacent to The Covenant and minutes from the Rancho Santa Fe Village shopping area, the upscale neighborhood of Hacienda Santa Fe offers residents the coveted Rancho Santa Fe lifestyle at a slightly lower price. Generally considered more affordable than homes in The Covenant, the Spanish- and Mediterranean-style, custom homes in Hacienda Santa Fe sit on large lots with luxury amenities and are just a short drive from all that North County has to offer.

Many of the homes have security gates, privacy landscaping, swimming pools and views, and all of the homes in this affluent community are located within the prestigious 92067 ZIP code, which consistently makes the list of the most expensive ZIP codes in the country. Residents of 92067 have a median household income of $105,266 and an average household worth of $1,101,682 ( Almost all of the residents (about 90%) are married and about 33.9% are married with children. Of the residents over the age of 18, 82% have at least a bachelors degree.

The Rancho Santa Fe neighborhood of Hacienda Santa Fe is close to shopping, dining, entertainment, arts and culture, country clubs, beaches, equestrian centers, and miles of hiking and riding trails, which makes this an ideal home base for those looking to enjoy an active lifestyle in an upscale area.


Most of the homes in this older Rancho Santa Fe subdivision were constructed in the late 1970s and 1980s.

While most of the 134 homes sites were developed in the 1970s and 1980s, there is some newer construction, and most of the older homes have been significantly remodeled with updates and upgrades. Parcels range in size from about one acre to three acres, and most homes have swimming pools and other luxury amenities.

Many homes within Hacienda Santa Fe sit behind security gates and are surrounded by landscaping that provides privacy, but this neighborhood is one of only a few in the Rancho Santa Fe area that is not a gated community. However, it does have an active homeowners association and CC&Rs (covenants, conditions and restrictions) that are enforced.

There are fewer than 10 homes for sale in Hacienda Santa Fe at the time of the writing. The lowest-priced luxury home on the market at this time is a four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,361-square-foot home with a swimming pool on 1.25 acres listed at $1,349,500.

The highest-priced home I could find in Hacienda Santa Fe at this time is a five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom, 4,952-square-foot, recently updated home on 2.11 acres on the market at $1,995,000.

Restaurants, Shopping & Entertainment

As more tenants move into the newly completed Cielo Village, this charming shopping center styled after an old-world Italian village is sure to become a favorite for Hacienda Santa Fe residents. Cielo Bistro and a few professional offices are already in place, but there will soon be more services, dining and shopping options serving the area. If you stop by to see what is new at Cielo Village, be sure to also stop at Paradise Produce Market on the opposite side of Del Dios Highway to browse their selection of gifts, succulents, convenience items (such as bread, milk and eggs) and — of course — local, organic produce.

Part of enjoying the Rancho Santa Fe lifestyle is meeting with friends to dine and shop in the Village of Rancho Santa Fe. This is where you will find the local market and pharmacy, post office and library, professional offices and financial institutions, and boutique shopping options like Country Friends Shop, Country Squire Gifts & Linens, Rancho Santa Fe Flowers & Gifts and Rancho Santa Fe Book Cellar. Eateries in The Village include Morada and Mille Fleurs at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, as well as Thyme in the Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe Sandwich Shop, Caffee Positano and Rancho Santa Fe Bistro.

On Sundays, locals converge at Del Rayo Village for the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market where they shop for local produce and artisan wares between 9:30am and 2:00pm.

Boutiques and locally owned eateries are wonderful, but sometimes you need a good old chain grocery store or a super-convenient drive-through to grab dinner on the way home. When it is time to run regular errands for everyday essentials, most folks living in Hacienda Santa Fe will find that driving just a few minutes to 4S Ranch is the most convenient option. The 4S Ranch Commons Town Center and the nearby 4S Ranch Village Center are home to grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, gas stations, fast food restaurants, a post office and just about anything else you might need on a regular basis. This is where you will find your nearest Cost Plus World Market, Bed Bath & Beyond, Jimbo’s…Naturally!, CVS Pharmacy, animal hospital and pet supply store. Restaurants in the area include Karl Strauss Brewing Company, Miguel’s Cocina, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Capri Blu, Pei Wei, Wendy’s and Daphne’s.

A few more minutes down Rancho Bernardo Way on the other side of Interstate 15, Rancho Bernardo Town Center offers additional dining options, including Carvers Steaks & Chops, Urge American Gastropub, The Kabob Shop and Pearl Chinese Cuisine. This is also where you will find GNC, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Vons, banks, and other shops and services.

Parks & Recreation

Most of the homes in Hacienda Santa Fe have private swimming pools on their large lots, some have sports courts and all have room for large gardens. This means that you may not even have to leave home to enjoy your favorite outdoor activities if you live in this area. Of course, if you do decide to leave home, you can enjoy beaches, golf courses, country clubs and hiking trails all within minutes of the neighborhood. After all, part of the draw of living in North County is the abundance of recreational opportunities found in every direction.

For folks who prefer their outdoor recreation to take place in a well-manicured, well-heeled setting, country clubs and golf courses in this upscale area include The Bridges, The Crosby Golf Club, The Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, The Farms Golf Club, Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, Stoneridge Country Club, The Santaluz Club, Morgan Run Club & Resort, Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course, Del Mar Country Club and Maderas Golf Club.

If you prefer enjoying the great outdoors in a less refined atmosphere, you will be happy to know that there are miles of hiking and riding trails, lakes, nature preserves and some of the most amazing views in all of North County within just minutes of Hacienda Santa Fe. One of the closest spots for picnicking, boating, fishing and hiking is nearby Lake Hodges. If you continue up Del Dios Highway, you will then come to the 784-acre Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, and then the 774-acre Del Dios Highlands Preserve, each of which offers miles of hiking trails for locals and visitors to enjoy.

To the southeast, you will find the 1,554-foot Black Mountain surrounded by the 2,352-acre Black Mountain Open Space Park. Miles of hiking, biking and riding trails are what brings most visitors to this North County attraction, including the popular, 2.5-mile Miner’s Ridge Loop Trail and the Summit Trail, which may be a bit too difficult for some hikers but is well worth the climb to see the gorgeous views from the top of Black Mountain.

Other nearby recreational areas include the beaches of Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana Beach, San Elijo Lagoon, San Dieguito River Park and the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve.

Rancho Santa Fe is well known as an upscale equestrian community, so it is no surprise that there are many equestrian centers in this area. Some of the training and boarding stables near Hacienda Santa Fe include The Riding Club, Dove Hollow Dressage Center, Blue Fox Farm, Willow Creek Stables, Kalimar Farms, Mega Arte Riding Academy, Harmony Grove Equestrian Center, Hunter Equestrian Center, Seabreeze Farms, Rancho El Camino Equestrian Center, Ridgemar and Concord Equestrian Center. The latter is located at the 65-acre Del Mar Horse Park, which is also home to a dressage arena, two jumping arenas, four show arenas, four practice arenas, and several events and horse shows that take place throughout the year.

Most public school students residing in Hacienda Santa Fe will start their primary education at Solana Beach Elementary School in the Solana Beach School District. They will then attend Earl Warren Middle School in the San Dieguito Union High School District, and most will go on to Torrey Pines High School, which is also in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Public high school students from this area also have the opportunity to participate in a lottery to attend Canyon Crest Academy.

There are many opportunities in this area for parents looking for a private school setting for their children’s education. Private preschools in the area include Village Nursery School, Kinderhouse Montessori School, Olivenhain Country Preschool, Lifetime Montessori School and St. Bartholomew’s Preschool. Private schools for older children include Santa Fe Christian School, Maranatha Christian School, Incarnation Lutheran Preschool, The Grauer School, Horizon Prep, Notre Dame Academy, Diegueno Country School, Cathedral Catholic High School, San Diego Jewish Academy, Encinitas Country Day School and Cal Coast Academy.

If you would like to find extracurricular activities for your children during summer or after school, there are many options, including martial arts studios, equestrian centers, art and music schools, dance studios, community sports leagues and gymnastics classes.


Hacienda Santa Fe is east of The Covenant, south of the Summit neighborhood and west of Rancho Del Rio. Del Dios Highway runs along the community’s northern border.
