North County San Diego Neighborhood Guide: Santaluz

In the vicinity of Rancho Santa Fe but considered part of the Black Mountain Ranch area, the gated community of Santaluz offers an upscale, resort-like lifestyle in one of Southern California’s most desirable golf communities.

Just minutes away from beaches, arts and culture, shopping, dining, country clubs and Black Mountain Open Space Park, this affluent community offers an ideal home base for professionals, families and retirees seeking an active, upscale lifestyle.

History

As part of the larger Black Mountain Ranch area of North County San Diego, Santaluz was built on land that was once inhabited by Native Americans and was later part of one of the many ranchos in the area during the Rancho Era.

In 1998, the San Diego City Council and voters living in San Diego voted to approve the Black Mountain Subarea Plan, which designated 67% of the land for open space and parks and 27% of the land for residential housing units. Homes in Santaluz were first sold in 2003.

Housing

The exclusive, gated neighborhood of Santaluz is considered one of the most sought-after golf communities in California. Most homes have golf course, mountain or valley views, and residents enjoy resort-style living and the security of having guards on duty 24 hours a day.

At the time of this writing, there are just a handful of homes for sale in this prestigious community with listing prices between about $1,200,000 and $4,375,000. Home styles in the neighborhood include Provence Farmhouse, Andalusia Farmhouse, Tuscany Farmhouse, Adobe Ranch, Santa Barbara and California Ranch. Both models and custom homes are found in Santaluz.

  • Casitas (2,100 to 2,600 square feet)
  • Sentinels (2,300 to 2,900 square feet)
  • Spanish Bungalows (2,700 to 3,600 square feet)
  • Garden Homes (3,000 to 4,200 square feet)
  • Hacienda Sur (3,200 to 3,800 square feet)
  • Belsera (3,800 to 4,800 square feet)
  • Davidson (3,800 to 4,800 square feet)
  • Posadas (4,800 to 5,500 square feet)

  • A five-bedroom, seven-bathroom, 6,572-square-foot home on 1.34 acres listed at $4,375,000
  • A three-bedroom, four bathroom, 3,221-square-foot home on .82 acre priced at $1,650,000
  • A three-bedroom, three-bathroom, 2,248-square-foot home listed at $1,299,000
  • A three-bedroom, three-bathroom, 2,248-square-foot home priced at $1,269,000

Restaurants, Shopping & Entertainment

Fine and casual dining are available within the community at The Santaluz Club. Formal dining can be enjoyed in the Club Room or in The Library, which is an intimate, private dining room that members can reserve for small dinner parties or special occasions. Casual dining options include the Clubhouse Dining Room, the Men’s Grill, the Ladies Lounge, and the Tavern and Grill Room. There is also the Fresh Roast Cafe, which offers salads, sandwiches, smoothies and coffee in the Hacienda and poolside.

There are a few services and restaurants located on Camino Del Sur, such as PostalAnnex+, Rosina’s Italian Restaurant, Verrazzanos and Ciao Bella Hair & Body Salon, but most of your everyday essentials will be found just a few more minutes away in Torrey Highlands, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos or 4S Ranch. There is the Fairbanks Village Plaza in the nearby community of Fairbanks; however, this small commercial center is mostly home to offices for real estate firms, lawyers, doctors, financial services and contractors, as well as the Fairbanks Ranch Deli, a hair salon and a tailor.

Along Black Mountain Road near the Ted Williams Freeway in the Rancho Penasquitos Towne Center, you will find Vons, CVS Pharmacy, Express Tires, Black Mountain Road Pet Clinic, PostalAnnex+, Shell, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Kahoots Pet Store, Bank of America, Chase Bank, GNC, Round Table Pizza, Cotijas Mex Grill and Seafood, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Jack in the Box.

Just a few minutes up Camino Del Sur, residents can enjoy greatly expanded shopping and dining options in 4S Ranch. The 4S Ranch Commons Town Center is the main shopping hub for this area and has just about everything you will need on a regular basis. This includes Ralph’s, CVS Pharmacy, Wells Fargo Bank, The UPS Store, ACE Hardware, Point Loma Credit Union, Cost Plus World Market, Jimbo’s…Naturally!, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Petco Unleashed, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bank of America, Jamba Juice, Panera Bread, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Miguel’s Cocina, Karl Strauss Brewing Company, salons, health care professionals, and several other shops, eateries and services.

The nearby 4S Ranch Village Center offers even more shopping and dining options, including Starbucks, Los Primos Mexican Food, Sushi on the Rock, Fresh & Easy, Flippin’ Pizza and Shell.

Santaluz is also just minutes from Rancho Santa Fe, which is home to The Village of Rancho Santa Fe, where you will find the local market, pharmacy, library, post office, professional offices, financial institutions, boutique shopping and eateries, such as Thyme in the Ranch, Rancho Santa Fe Bistro, Rancho Santa Fe Sandwich Company, Morada and Mille Fleurs. It is also home to the Del Rayo Village Shopping Center, which has a cycle shop, home furnishing stores, a men’s clothing store, a gas station and Dolce Pan E Vino. This is also where locals gather on Sundays from 9:30am to 2:00pm for the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market.

Plans are in the works for building a town center in the Black Mountain Ranch area, which will bring everyday essentials even closer to home for folks who live in Santaluz but, for now, there are plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment options within a short drive in the areas mentioned above, as well as nearby Del Mar, Solana Beach, Poway and Encinitas.

Parks & Recreation

Santaluz is an ideal home base for active professionals, couples, families and retirees, particularly those with an interest in golf, tennis, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding or spending time at the beach. This centrally located North County neighborhood is surrounded by country clubs, equestrian centers and outdoor recreation areas and, of course, it is just a short drive to the beaches of Del Mar, Encinitas and Solana Beach.

If you choose to join The Santaluz Club, you will not have to travel far to enjoy spa services, fitness facilities and an array of amenities. The 35,000-square-foot clubhouse designed to resemble a Southern California ranch-style home overlooks the 300-acre, Rees Jones-designed golf course that winds through the neighborhood. In the clubhouse, members can enjoy fine and casual dining, a golf pro shop, a full menu of spa services, yoga classes, social events and more.

For an even more exclusive club experience, there is the Hacienda Santaluz, which is a 15,000-square-foot recreation facility overlooking the Village Green with membership opportunities available only to Santaluz residents. This is where you will find the fitness center, six tennis courts, a resort-style swimming pool, an indoor basketball court, a courtyard for outdoor activities and a multipurpose room.

The Club offers summers camps, outdoor movie nights, holiday celebrations, summer concerts, wine festivals and social events throughout the year. There is also a dog park, hiking and biking trails, and a variety of community clubs, including play groups, a hiking club, book clubs, a ladies lunch club, a bridge club and more.

Other golf courses and country clubs in the area include The Farms Golf Club, the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, Lomas Santa Fe Country Club, Lomas Santa Fe Executive Golf Course, Morgan Run Club & Resort and the Del Mar Country Club.

Equestrian centers in the area include the Ridgemar Equestrian Center, Rancho El Camino Equestrian Center and Concord Equestrian Center, which is part of the 65-acre Del Mar Horse Park.

Black Mountain Open Space Park is just minutes away and offers miles of hiking, biking and riding trails with amazing views of the surrounding area. There is also Black Mountain Ranch Community Park, Lake Hodges, the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, San Elijo Lagoon, Torrey Pines State Reserve, Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar Fairgrounds and beaches all within an easy drive.

Del Norte High School

Schools

Public school students are served by the high-ranking Poway Unified School District and most often attend Willow Grove Elementary School, Black Mountain Middle School and Del Norte High School, which is located in 4S Ranch.

Private schools within driving distance include Cathedral Catholic High School, Horizon Prep, San Diego Jewish Academy, Cal Coast Academy, Fusion Academy, Diegueno Country School and Santa Fe Christian School.

Boundaries

Santaluz is south of the Del Sur neighborhood, north of Fairbanks Highlands, east of Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch, and west of 4S Ranch and the Black Mountain Open Space Park.

Camino Del Sur wraps around the community’s western border and is where you will find both gated entrances leading into the neighborhood.
