San Luis Rey Heights is a semi-rural neighborhood in Fallbrook in North County San Diego. Most of the custom, single-family homes here are on larger lots that are zoned for horses and have amenities ranging from swimming pools and guest houses to orchards and horse facilities.
Highway 76 is just south of the community, which allows for access to nearby employment centers and an easy drive to expanded shopping, dining and entertainment options in Oceanside, Temecula and downtown San Diego.
As in most Fallbrook neighborhoods, San Luis Rey Heights residents enjoy the tranquility of country living among the beautiful, rolling hills just minutes from the nearest golf course and only about 30 minutes from the beach.

Looking at current listings and recently sold, single-family homes in San Luis Rey Heights, it appears that homes in this area range in price from about $500,000 to just under $1,000,000 and generally sell for close to the asking price. San Luis Rey Heights homes vary in architectural style, are custom built, and were built over a period of several decades with some of the newest homes constructed after 2010 and the oldest prior to 1950.
I found just one home for sale in this Fallbrook neighborhood at the time of this writing, which is a four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom, 2,975-square-foot home on 2.17 acres listed at $715,000.
San Luis Rey Heights Shopping, Dining & Entertainment
Residents of San Luis Rey Heights are about 10 minutes from downtown Fallbrook and just a quick drive down Highway 76 to Bonsall. From this central location, you can take care of most of your to-do list within a few miles from home, since gas stations, pharmacies, grocery stores, hardware stores, feed stores, salons, banks and healthcare providers can all be found in one of these quaint villages. You can also stop to grab coffee on the way to do your errands or meet up with friends for some boutique shopping or lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area.
Of course, if you are in the mood for something a little more exciting than meeting for lunch, or if you have guests visiting from out of town, you can also enjoy an impromptu art and wine adventure without ever leaving Fallbrook. Some newcomers are surprised to learn that Fallbrook has such a thriving art scene, but once you have spent any time here, you will quickly see why it has been listed among the top 100 art towns in America.
Fallbrook Arts, Inc. is the main art organization in town and is the group behind Fallbrook Art Center, Fallbrook Brandon Gallery, Fallbrook Art in Public Places, and Fallbrook School of the Arts. Art lovers will surely want to check out the gallery and the exhibits at the art center, as well as strolling through town to seek out the public art installations between craft beer tasting at the Fallbrook Brewing Company or grabbing a sweet treat at the eclectic Café de Artistes.
There is also the Fallbrook Film Festival hosted by the Fallbrook Film Factory, live performances at Mission Theater, local arts and crafts at the weekly farmers market, and tons of community events that are worth checking out.
You will find even more shopping and dining options just down Highway 76 in Bonsall, most of which are located at the River Village Plaza. This is also where you will find the closest movie theater showing wide-release films. Just up Highway 76, you will come to Pala Mesa, which has a handful of offerings and, if you head north on Interstate 15 here, you will reach Temecula and its greatly expanded options. Of course, you can also stay in North County San Diego by heading towards the coast to take advantage of all that Oceanside has to offer.
San Luis Rey Heights Parks & Recreation
San Luis Rey Heights is about 30 minutes from the nearest beach, surrounded by hiking and riding trails, almost directly next door to a golf course, and only a few minutes from Fallbrook’s private airport. This means that residents and visitors can enjoy a wide array of outdoor activities that are within reach from this great location.
There are more than 160 hiking, riding, trail running and biking trails and paths in North County San Diego and nearly all of them can be enjoyed from San Luis Rey Heights with plenty of time to get home in time for dinner. Horse lovers and hikers will find some trails winding through the rolling hills of Fallbrook but will find the majority of local trails in one of the 11 nature preserves managed by the Fallbrook Land Conservancy. Other nearby options can be found in Cleveland National Forest, Palomar Mountain State Park and the San Luis Rey River Trail System.
When not on the trails, residents here enjoy access to several nearby boarding and training stables, a handful of community parks scattered throughout Fallbrook, the programming and activities offered at Fallbrook Community Center, and golfing at one of the many nearby clubs and courses. The closest golf course to San Luis Rey Heights is just to the east at Golf Club of California. Other nearby options include Pala Mesa Resort, Welk Resort, Vista Valley Country Club, Arrowood Golf Course and Castle Creek Country Club.

There are several private schools serving Fallbrook neighborhoods, including Spirit Mountain School, St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, New Covenant Christian Academy, Peppertree Montessori, A Step in Time Preschool, Montessori Adolescent Academy, Fallbrook Montessori, Rock Rose School for Creative Learning, Fallbrook United Methodist School, St. Stephen Lutheran School, and Alpha & Omega Academy.
Public school students living in the San Luis Rey Heights area are primarily served by the Bonsall Unified School District and the Fallbrook Union High School District.
Adult learners interested in continuing their education within a short drive from home have several options, including California State University San Marcos, National University, John Paul the Great Catholic University, San Joaquin Valley College, MiraCosta College, Miramar College and Palomar College.
