J. Grant Brittain: 30 Years of Skate Photography

Join us for a special film premiere event at the historic La Paloma Theatre for the release of “J. Grant Brittain: 30 Years of Skate Photography,” a 20-minute short film featuring iconic skate photographer J. Grant Brittain. The artist shares insights into his career of documenting a generation of skaters, from hanging out at Del Mar Skate Ranch in the 1980s, to the recreation of the famed photo of the Bones Brigade on the Chin Ramp (Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill). This documentary also features legendary pro-skater Chris Miller — Brittain’s long-time subject, collaborator, and friend — and marks the first time the two have ever been interviewed together on film. “I tried to change skateboard photography from just being that, ‘capture the action,’ and giving it kind of a different look and looking at other elements in the scene…It was more showing the culture or the feeling of skateboarding, you know, the freedom we get out of skateboarding.” —Grant Brittain

Following the screening will be a Q&A with Grant Brittain, Chris Miller, and filmmakers Barbarella and David Fokos.

  • La Paloma Theatre, 471 South Coast Hwy 101, Encinitas
  • Time: 6:30 doors open, 7:30 show begins
  • To ensure a space, please RSVP to [email protected]
  • Cost of attendance is only 5 bucks, to cover location expenses.

In The Mood-1940’s Revue

IN THE MOOD began as a celebration of an unusual era in American music, the 1940s…the Swing era. On radio, in theaters and ballrooms, the Big Bands were drawing record crowds. Vocal groups and soloists sang a repertoire of great songs, and for the last time in the 20th century, the entire country shared a common popular music. This body of song did much to sustain national morale during World War II, the pivotal event of the ’40s. The National Archives in Washington, DC brought IN THE MOOD to their audiences as part of their commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of WWII, and the response was extraordinary, with crowds lining up for hours before curtain time. The engagement was twice extended.
