Del Mar may be where the surf meets the turf, but its also the place where health meets happiness.
Gorgeous scenery, year-round sunshine and a casual vibe make it easy for residents and visitors to don workout gear or swimwear for an active day around town. If you are looking for new ways to burn a few calories or kickstart healthy living, consider these 15 things to do in Del Mar.
1. Walk Along the San Dieguito River
The Riverpath Del Mar is a quarter-mile flat route that offers stunning views of the water and places to picnic or stop and rest on a bench. The Riverpath is located west of Jimmy Durante Boulevard, along the south side of the river, and is OK for leashed dogs. Here is the Riverpath trail map.
2. Stroll Along the Beach
Grab your friends and start at Powerhouse Park and walk along the scenic shoreline to Dog Beach and back for a flat one-mile walk.
3. Take a Challenging Run
This run also starts at Powerhouse Park but heads in the opposite direction. Run along the water, parallel to the inlet just north of Torry Pines State Park. Then, run up to North Torrey Pines Road to Torrey Pines State Park. There’s a steep hill to tackle, but the view from the top will be worth it. Head back to where you started and feel good about finishing this challenging six mile loop.
4. Go Hiking
Hike the Crest Canyon trail, a bowl-shaped valley that slopes down from Del Mar Heights Road on the south to San Dieguito Lagoon on the north. Leashed dogs are allowed easy to moderate trail and it’s a great place to admire a number of California native plants. Check out the Crest Canyon trail map.
5. Take an Electric Bike Ride
Head up to Solana Beach to rent a bike at San Diego Electric Bike Company. Why an electric bike? They allow you to pedal hard when you like and cruise when a breather is in order. They are becoming an increasingly popular way to explore the coastal streets of Del Mar.
6. Go Surfing
The annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon proves that even dogs surf in Del Mar. For people who would like to learn, try Fulcrum Surf School located on Camino Del Mar. They also offer a variety of awesome programs for kids of all ages including after-school camps, private lessons, and coaching. Need to rent some surf gear? Rusty Del Mar on 15th Street has been servicing locals for 50 years!
7. Take the Dog to the Beach
Pack up the pooch and head to Del Mar’s Dog Beach, located just south of Via de la Valle on Camino Del Mar. Make sure your dog is well-behaved as lifeguards can issue tickets for unruly behavior. Dogs must be leashed June 15th through Labor Day but dogs able to run under voice control of owner from the day after Labor Day through June 14th.
8. Not Your Average Yoga or Pilates Classes
Take your personal practice to the beach or participate in an organized yoga class at Seagrove Park or the adjacent Powerhouse Park with waves crashing in the background. Place 360 Health + Spa arranges group seaside yoga classes by appointment.
Or, try the MELT class at Bindu Yoga Studio, located in Del Mar Village, which utilizes soft foam rollers and smaller hand and foot balls to roll your muscles and joints into happiness.
For those who love the big gym experience, The Gym in Del Mar is a 9000 state-of-the-art facility with a calendar full of workout classes ranging from cycling to strength training to yoga. Guests in residence at the Del Mar Inn will enjoy a free membership throughout the duration of their stay.

9. Play Tennis
The Surf and Turf Tennis Club on Jimmy Durante Boulevard provides tennis instruction for all levels of play from camps to private lessons.

The market happens in the Del Mar City Hall parking lot between 10th and 11th streets. It’s also the second oldest Farmer’s Market in the region.
13. Ride a Horse
A number of local stables provide horseback riding lessons and guided rides through local trails. And, yes, it’s an excellent way to get some exercise while enjoying year-round sunshine. Eating healthy food in Del Mar doesn’t mean sacrifice. Opt for the signature, protein packed Powerhouse breakfast at Stratford Court Cafe featuring egg whites, soy sausage, spinach, tomato, feta cheese, black beans and spinach tortilla.
15. Really Detox
Order a 3-day or 5-day organic lifestyle cleanse from Beaming, just west of the I-5 in Del Mar. Mornings start with a green juice followed by a smoothie.
